Es Posible
Lula won by 4.4 million votes. Flávio Bolsonaro leaves Brazil and, according to my sources, will lead the resistance from the United States. Washington speeds up in Venezuela, Cuba and Mexico, and squeezes Brazil where it hurts most: money.
Why it was lost, how the board looks now, what Trump will do with Brazil, the next six months in Venezuela, why María Corina Machado will be president, what Marco Rubio has at stake and why Taddei's fall opens Mexico's 2027 election.
Lula won Brazil. He did not win the continent.
Washington lost a big piece and it is not getting up from the table. It is going to speed up.
And Brazil's right lost the chair, not its strength.
What does Washington do when it loses the piece it counted as won?
And what does that mean for Mexico?
Each square is a country. The color tells you who governs. The count below does not add up countries: it adds up people.
Brazil and Mexico together: 52% of the population and 57% of the GDP of Latin America and the Caribbean.
World Bank 2024 population and GDP (indicators SP.POP.TOTL and NY.GDP.MKTP.CD). The share uses all of Latin America and the Caribbean as the base, 662 million people. Each government's classification is the author's. "If Brazil had fallen" shows today's board with Flávio Bolsonaro as president. "2027" is the author's projection: Venezuela with María Corina Machado.
Lula won with 51.79% against 48.21%. The margin was 4,430,191 votes, in a country of 158 million voters. Three weeks earlier, in the first round, Flávio Bolsonaro was ahead: 47.03 to 45.16.
What happened in those three weeks? Four things, and none of them is a mystery.
One, people who did not vote went out and voted. Abstention fell from 21.08% to 19.22%. Lula added more than ten million votes in three weeks: about three million of them in the Northeast. He won all nine states in the Northeast. Minas Gerais, where he was down by 590,000 votes, he won by 99,000.
Two, the state's checkbook. In the middle of the campaign the government raised Bolsa Família by 15% and banned online betting by provisional measure. The opposition calls it buying votes with public money. That is why Flávio no longer asks to annul the election. He now asks to strip the Lula-Alckmin ticket of its registration for abuse of economic power.
Three, the Washington effect. The tariffs, Trump's closeness to the Bolsonaro family and his public praise of Flávio after the first round handed Lula his best slogan: Brazil belongs to Brazilians. Analyst James Bosworth put it this way: Eduardo Bolsonaro's lobbying for the tariffs backfired.
Four, the candidate. TIME documented Flávio's ties to criminal figures in Rio and to banker Daniel Vorcaro, and that blunted his security message. He is presumed innocent. But in a campaign, suspicion votes too.
Then there is the extra hour. Justice Cristiano Zanin extended voting until 7 p.m. Both campaigns had asked for extensions; the order answered the request of Lula's coalition. The head of the electoral court said it did not change the result. An independent count of the ballot-box records, not an official statistic, puts the votes cast in that window at 34,319. Flávio said they changed "the rules of the game in the middle of the game." With a 4.4 million vote margin, the extra hour does not explain the defeat. It explains the anger.
Now what nobody is telling you.
Flávio Bolsonaro won 59,826,041 votes. His father, in 2022, won 58,206,354. Brazil's right grew by 1.6 million votes and still lost. It did not shrink. It was one piece short.
And in Congress it won. The Bolsonaros' Liberal Party will have 121 deputies; Lula's PT, 70. In the Senate, 28 to 9. The right and its allies hold more than 60% of the Senate, the chamber that confirms every Supreme Court justice. Tarcísio de Freitas was re-elected in São Paulo in the first round, with about 62.7%, against Fernando Haddad. Sergio Moro will govern Paraná. Political scientist Guilherme Casarões said it plainly: Lula has his hands tied.
On Monday, October 26, the PL recognized the result proclaimed by the court. Flávio did not. He recorded a video and said: "To resist chaos, I am going to organize the opposition." That sentence, more than the other one, is the one that matters for the next four years.
What is confirmed. A U.S. official told Reuters that Flávio Bolsonaro is on his way to the United States. According to allies cited by CNN Brasil, he left with his wife and two daughters. He did not surrender his passports by the 11 a.m. deadline set by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and the Federal Police canceled them. The route remains unconfirmed: the Federal Police have no record of him passing through a regular immigration checkpoint, and Argentina's immigration office has no record of his entry.
I broke it early. I published it on X on the morning of October 27:
Simón Levy@SimonLevyMxI can confirm that @FlavioBolsonaro is no longer in Brazil and is on his way to the United States.
